ENTRE News – The atmosphere in Bangladesh is increasingly tense. Demonstrators in Bangladesh stormed a central Bangladesh district prison, Narsingdi and released hundreds of prisoners, Friday (19/7). As reported by AFP, after releasing the prisoners, the crowd also set fire to the prison.
“I don’t know the number of detainees, but it could reach hundreds,” said a local police officer who declined to be named.
The demonstration against civil servant quotas killed 105 people. The Dhaka Police took emergency steps by prohibiting all people from carrying out activities outside the home to prevent further violence.
“We have banned all rallies, processions and public gatherings in Dhaka today,” Police Chief Habibur Rahman told AFP.
However, this did not stop the wave of clashes between police and demonstrators in the city of 20 million people. The local government also tried to block internet access to prevent organizations from carrying out protests. However, these efforts also failed to quell the crowd.
“Our protest will continue,” said Sarwar Tushar, a demonstrator who suffered minor injuries when the protest was forcibly dispersed by police.
“We want Sheikh Hasina’s immediate resignation. The government is responsible for this murder.”
The clashes followed weeks of peaceful student protests against a quota system for government jobs. Students asked that an achievement-based scheme be implemented. The Bangladesh government currently implements a quota system that gives up to 30 percent of government jobs to the families of veterans of the 1971 war.
According to critics, this system is discriminatory because it only benefits pro-Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina’s children and harms high-achieving children. In 2018, Hasina’s government stopped this quota system following massive student protests. But last month, the Bangladesh High Court overturned the ruling and reinstated the quota system after families of 1971 veterans filed a petition.
