French Train Has Not Recovered from Sabotage, 800 Thousand People Affected

ENTRE News – Traffic on France’s three main high-speed train lines had yet to recover on Saturday (27/7), a day after saboteurs paralyzed much of the rail network ahead of the opening ceremony for the 2024 Olympics in Paris. Only 7 out of 10 trains will operate on Saturday on three main routes with delays averaging one to two hours, state railway company SNCF said. Kathleen Cuvellier, speaking in the northern city of Lille, said her journey to Avignon in the south would now be a “hell” ride. Cuvellier, who was traveling with her two-year-old son, said she now had to take a slower train to Paris to catch another train to Avignon.

He also said, “the travel time was originally four hours and now it is seven hours”. Cecile Bonnefond, whose train from Lille to the western city of Nantes was cancelled, said she had no other choice. No party claimed responsibility for the coordinated overnight arson attacks on cable boxes at strategically chosen intersections north, southwest and east of the French capital, where the Olympic opening ceremony was held on Friday evening.

Traffic will remain disrupted until Sunday on the northern route towards Lille and Brussels, but will gradually improve on the Atlantic route towards Brittany and the southwest, SNCF said. Eastern routes to Strasbourg and Germany have largely returned to normal. The SNCF railway company said the sabotage was a “massive attack”. There was an attempt to destroy safety equipment on the fourth line to the Mediterranean, but this was thwarted by railway officials. SNCF said they worked through the night in difficult conditions in the rain to allow traffic improvements on high-speed lines affected by sabotage.

The coordinated attack, which took place at 4:00 am (0200 GMT) early Friday morning, saw fiber optic cables cut and caught fire. The cable that runs along the track serves to transmit safety information to the train driver. The attack was well prepared and carried out by the same organization, a source close to the investigation said. SNCF estimates around 250,000 passengers were affected on Friday. Junior transport minister Patrice Vergriete said 800,000 people could be affected over three days. Many travelers were on their way to the French capital to watch the start of the Olympics, while others were hoping to travel in the opposite direction to start their summer holidays.

“Customers will be contacted via text message and email to confirm the running of their trains,” SNCF said.
