French Optical Cable Network Sabotaged during Paris Olympics

ENTRE News – Fiber optic cables in a number of French regions were sabotaged during the Paris Olympics. This incident occurred three days after France’s main railway system was also sabotaged ahead of the opening of the Olympics.

Reported by AFP, police said the cables of several telecommunications operators had been sabotaged in six French regions during the night from Sunday (28/7) to Monday (29/7). But Paris was not affected by this sabotage. A number of large telecommunications operators including Free and SFR said they were affected, although no major disruptions were reported.

“It was vandalism. A large section of the cable was cut,” said SFR spokesman Nicolas Chatin.

Sources said that so far no one has claimed responsibility for the sabotage.

“What frankly makes us angry is that we feel the country has not yet realized the significance of a potential attack on France’s strategic infrastructure,” said Nicolas Guillaume of operator Netalis.

Traffic on France’s three main high-speed train lines had not yet recovered on Saturday (27/7), a day after saboteurs paralyzed most of the train network ahead of the opening ceremony for the 2024 Olympics in Paris.

Only 7 out of 10 trains will operate on Saturday on three main routes with delays averaging one to two hours, state railway company SNCF said. The train network only returned to normal on Monday. It is still unclear who carried out the three attacks on strategic points of the railway infrastructure.
