Reasons why Joe Biden withdrew from the US presidential election

ENTRE NewsJoe Biden announced his withdrawal from the 2024 United States presidential election and supported his deputy, Kamala Harris, to run as the Democratic presidential candidate. In his resignation statement on Sunday (21/7) via social media, Biden said this decision was made in the best interests of his party (Democrats) and the country.

“It has been the greatest honor of my life to serve as your president,” Biden said in his resignation letter.

“And although I intend to seek re-election, I believe that it is in the best interests of my party and the country that I should resign and focus solely on fulfilling my duties as President for the remainder of my term,” he added.

This move threw Democrats into “chaos” again ahead of the US presidential election, which will be held on November 5. But Biden’s appointment of Harris as his replacement also brings fresh air to Democrats. Harris has stated her commitment to being Biden’s successor, and emphasized that she will fight to win official support ahead of the party’s convention which will be held in August.

“I am honored to have the President’s support and my intention is to obtain and win this nomination,” Kamala Harris said in a statement.

Reported by AFP, Biden’s withdrawal from the US presidential election has long been expected. This official news finally came suddenly, a few days after Biden was declared infected with Covid-19 and was resting in Delaware.

Biden’s resignation also came more than a week after Donald Trump was the target of a shooting while campaigning in Pennsylvania on Saturday (13/7). Trump has been officially nominated by the Republican Party to run for the US Presidential Election.

In recent weeks, calls for Biden to resign have also become louder after he was said to have lost the first debate against Trump. His electability is at 43 percent, compared to Trump who has so far received 46 percent support in opinion polls. After this announcement, Biden said he would convey his official position in detail in public this weekend.

“I will speak publicly later this week in detail about my decision,” Biden said.

“For now, let me express my deepest gratitude to all those who have worked hard to see me re-elected,” he added.
