ENTRE News – One way that a number of couples do this after not having children for a long time is to undergo an IVF program. But is it true that babies born through IVF are more likely to be born with twins?
Obstetrics and gynecology specialist, reproductive endocrinology fertility consultant, Binarwan Halim, said there is a reason why many babies born from the IVF process are born as twins. This happens because more than one embryo is used in the IVF pregnancy process. The more embryos transferred to the uterus, the greater the woman’s chances of getting pregnant.
“The principle is the same as planting rice, lots of seeds are planted. Because there is a selection process so that the best seeds can grow,” said Binarwan.
Therefore, when two or three good quality embryos are implanted together in the uterus, it is likely that all the embryos can be fertilized. This is what causes the birth of twins or even triplets.
Binarwan said, the birth of twins in the IVF program was indeed 25 percent greater than the birth of babies without the IVF program. Even so, the incidence of twins born in the IVF program no longer occurs. Unless the parents want it.
“In the past, it was true (twin test tube babies) were more likely to happen. But that doesn’t happen now,” he said.
The reason is, with current technological advances, medical personnel can implant one of the best embryos in the IVF FOR4D process.
“Now you don’t need a lot. Just one (embryo) of the best quality,” he said.
