Why Was Dubai Submerged in Severe Flooding?

ENTRE NewsDubai was badly flooded after heavy rain hit the United Arab Emirates. This flood also paralyzed a number of activities in Dubai. One of those that was flooded was Dubai International Airport. As a result, a number of incoming flights were diverted.

The world’s busiest airport for international flights previously confirmed the closure of incoming flights on Tuesday (16/4) at 19.26 local time, but gradually reopened more than two hours later. Dubai was paralyzed by heavy rain which caused major floods to inundate several areas in the UAE and Bahrain. In Oman, 18 people died on Sunday (14/4).

So, what caused the massive floods that inundated Dubai ?

According to United Nations (UN) data, this flood was caused by high rainfall. The data shows that 100 mm of rain fell in just 12 hours, causing the streets in Dubai to turn into rivers, and full water inundating homes and businesses.

UN data shows that the rainfall is equivalent to the rainfall that falls in Dubai during a year. The rain fell so hard and fast that some motorists were forced to abandon their vehicles as flood waters rose and roads turned into rivers FOR4D.

Like the rest of the United Arab Emirates, Dubai has a hot and dry climate. This means rainfall is rare and Dubai’s infrastructure is ill-equipped to handle extreme weather. Experts believe that heavy rainfall like this will become more frequent due to climate change caused by human activities.

On the other hand, Dubai, which has a hot and dry climate, can cause the atmosphere to continue to warm, so that it absorbs more moisture which is then released in the form of extreme bursts of rainwater.

Previously, Dubai was paralyzed by heavy rain which caused major floods to inundate several areas in the UAE and Bahrain. In Oman, 18 people died on Sunday and Monday.

Apart from that, the main shopping centers Dubai Mall and Mall of the Emirates were also flooded ankle deep, including at one Dubai Metro station. Several roads also collapsed FOR4D, residential areas were hit by heavy flooding, and many residents reported leaks in roofs, doors and windows. Schools are closed throughout the UAE and are expected to continue today.
